A Hero’s Welcome @ Rancho San Diego Elementary School

SAN DIEGO – A Navy sailor who has been away from his family for 358 days was able to stop counting the days Wednesday as he surprised his two daughters at their San Diego schools.

Omar Aleman returned to San Diego Wednesday and immediately went to be with his family.

homecomingHe started at Rancho San Diego Elementary school where Abella Aleman was reading a Valentine’s Day letter meant for her dad.

“You are the greatest dad because you are so special. I miss you and I love you. Thank you for being my dad. Will you be my Valentine?”

When she was done, her dad who was standing behind her answered “yes.”

”I gave him a humongous hug,” the first grader said with tears running down her cheeks.

An hour later, Aleman went across town to see his daughter Alyssa. She was settling into a counseling assembly when her dad walked into the room.

Alyssa recognized the man wearing Navy camouflage and blurted “Daddy!?”

“It seems like a dream. It’s been so long… life is a lot harder without him home,” said Alyssa.

Meridian Student Art Featured at the Guggenheim Museum!!!

I am not sure if you have heard of this project from Tonya Lee at Meridian. She submitted her class artwork to Brad Montague, Uncle and film maker for Kid President. Their class artwork made it to the video, was taken to the Guggenheim Museum and highlighted in the narrative.  If you watch the video, all of the art on black paper is from Meridian.

SDSU-SDCOE Red Carpet School Visit at Bostonia Language Academy

On January 11, the Bostonia Language Academy’s Multilingual Program opened its doors to educators from all over the state as a Dual Language and English Learner Conference Red Carpet School.  SDSU and SDCOE, organizers of this conference, highlighted the Bostonia Language Academy as an exemplary school that promotes rigorous instruction through an ambitious trilingual program – English, Spanish, and Computer Science- and as one that promotes Equity, Innovation and Leadership.  Our guests commended the Bostonia Language Academy for a positive school culture, an innovative approach to integrating coding and immersion, a supportive school leadership, and exemplary instruction.  The Bostonia Language Academy has been recognized as a high-quality, dual language immersion model and our staff is extremely proud of the work that takes place every day.

During this Red Carpet School visit, students shared their experiences with guests during individual presentations and by participating in a teacher and student panel.  During these two experiences, students utilized the Presentation Literacy Skills they have been developing to share in English and Spanish. The students showcased their Trimester 1 Computer Science project (SCRATCH based), and the LEGO Robotics projects they are currently working on.  During classroom visits, TK-4th grade students welcomed guests by introducing themselves and sharing the learning that was taking place in their classes.  Some of the learning tasks that guests observed included: blended learning, implementation of the Columbia Teacher College writing program, GoMath, across-content area instruction with embedded digital literacy skills, and computer science instruction.

The Bostonia Language Academy currently serves students in Preschool-4th grade and will be adding 5th grade for the 2017-18 school year.  Preschool students experience a daily Spanish enrichment strand, and TK-4th grade students are immersed in an instructional environment that teaches Computer Science, and English and Spanish literacy.  For more information on this program, please call 588-3121 or visit our website at http://www.cajonvalley.net/bostonia.  Give your student the gift of multilingualism! The Bostonia Language Academy is currently accepting TK-5th grade applications for the 2017-2018 school year (2nd-5th grade students must be bilingual and biliterate to enroll in our program) come in to our Program Parent Information Meeting and a school tour, please see our website for more information on these bimonthly events.

Cajon Valley’s Hour of Code 2016

Cajon Valley’s Hour of Code 2016 was a HUGE success thanks to the enthusiasm and involvement of our teachers, principals, and even parents!  Whether it was a school-wide event or teachers creating activities for their students, the week created a positive buzz around the district.  Thank you to all of you who shared your photos and experiences with us.  Please enjoy the video we have created  for you (and your students) to enjoy.  Hopefully, your interest in Hour of Code and exposure to Code.org will inspire you to add Computer Science to your classroom curriculum.  If you have not yet attended a Code.org workshop, please look for upcoming opportunities and join us!  After attending a workshop, you will return to your classroom with a complete curriculum as well as the tools to get started.  **Please note that you need no prior experience or education in Computer Science to implement this program right into your everyday teaching!

Thank you again for creating such an innovative, motivating experience for our students.  We really appreciated all of you who filled out our forms with comments and suggestions that will help us as we plan next year’s Hour of Code!  As a thank you, Print Shop has created a great banner for your site – if not already delivered, it will be delivered soon!

Thank you for all you do…

Avocado Gators Recognized by MIND Research Institute: K-12 Game-a-thon Winners

Our friends at MIND Research Institute sponsored the K-12 Game-a-thon this past year.  “The K-12 Game-a-thon challenges students to design, build and share a game that features creative and unusual solutions to mathematical problems.”

Avocado fourth grade teams collaborated, created and invented indoor games, apps, and outdoor games that addressed one or more mathematical topic. Our student teams participated in this competition on their own time with support from their teachers Mrs. Gillis and Mrs. Ortega.  They enjoyed the process which allowed them to think about math outside of the classroom.

Approximately 100 entries were submitted from across the United States.  We would like to recognize all of our Gators that participated, and would like to congratulate the “Fractioneers” team from Mrs. Gillis’s class for being identified as one of the “2016 Top 5 Game-a-thon Teams”!  Avocado’s “Fractioneers” team received an awards package and is now immortalized in the Game-a-thon Hall of Fame!  Congratulations, “Fractioneers”!  Check out their Fraction Tag video.

Cajon Valley Celebrates The El Cajon Police Dept. & Heartland Fire and Rescue

For Red Ribbon Week local Superheroes from The El Cajon Police Department and Heartland Fire & Rescue helped the children of Cajon Valley say “no to drugs” and make healthy choices.  The students had lots of fun learning about the very important work our police officers and firefighters do every day to make our community safe.  This video is part 2 of 2. (a continuation of kid logic)

Student body presidents from each of our twenty-six schools accompanied by counselors, principals, and some parents by bus to the Lexington Fire Station and the El Cajon Police Department to deliver thank you letters from all Cajon Valley Students.  Our Child Nutrition team cooked a healthy and delicious lunch for our local firefighters and police officers to enjoy with our student leaders.  Check out the videos below to see a couple of our rock star middle school ASB presidents speaking at the station and a short slideshow of our kids engaging with our local superheroes.
